Thirsk
Thirsk is an attractive north Yorkshire market town with a central cobbled square dominated by the grand town clock. Many of the central shops have retained their original frontage giving the town a charming, traditional atmosphere. The charismatic centre, which dates back to medieval times, comes alive every Monday and Saturday with varied, colourful market stalls selling everything from fruit and vegetables to computer games and hardware.
Thirsk is also the former hometown of the late James Herriot, famous veterinary surgeon and author, sometimes known as Alf Wight. Today, you can pay tribute to the great writer at the World of James Herriot, one of the country’s best loved attractions. Learn about the life and times of this international celebrity and gain an insight into life in the 1940s; meanwhile, the kids can learn the basics of becoming a vet! Opposite to this is Thirsk Museum, the birthplace of Thomas Lord, founder of Lord’s Cricket Ground. With eight rooms full of exhibits including cricketing memorabilia, farming equipment and even Saxon bones, we’re sure the whole family will be fascinated by this historical site.
If you’re visiting Thirsk between April and September, it’s well worth a visit to Thirsk Racecourse – ‘Country Racing at its Best!’ All enclosures have great views of the whole course, which sits almost entirely against a gorgeous countryside backdrop. The wide range of enclosures provide a variety of prices to suit all budgets, from family outings with a picnic to posh 'champagne and seafood' visits! For an alternative family activity try the Thirsk Falconry Centre, which boasts over 70 birds and several flying displays every day. Furthermore, the centre offers opportunities to handle and interact with these amazing creatures so don’t forget to take your camera!
