Halifax
Halifax was at the centre of the industrial revolution and benefitted from the manufacture of woollen cloth which was exported all over the world; The Halifax Piece Hall is where a lot of the woollen trading took place years ago. Today it houses the market and is a very popular place for locals and visitors. The Town Hall was built by the same person who built The Houses of Parliament, Charles Barry. The Duke of Wellington's Regimental Headquarters are based at Wellesley Park.
For the younger generation the museum ‘Eureka’ was opened in 1992 by HRH Prince Charles and offers children an interesting, hands on insight to science. The museum is open 10am-5pm every day and there is an admission fee.
It is possible to walk into the countryside from the town centre in a matter of minutes when you venture into one of Halifax's parks. These include Savile Park and People's Park with its beautifully restored statues and fountain. The countryside of Rishworth Moor in the West gives way to the lush Ryburn Valley. Haworth, home to the Brontes, is only a few miles North and well worth a visit.
As a busy town, Halifax has many well known high street shops with plenty of cafes, restaurants, wine bars and pubs. There is a good choice of accommodation ranging from hotels to bed and breakfasts in the town with holiday cottages available in the surrounding countryside.
Located close to Bradford and Leeds with good roads and rail links, there’s plenty to do in and around the area.
