The Wolds
Home > The Wolds | "Take a walk on the Wold side" will be a familiar saying for those who have already discovered the expanse and magnetism of the Wolds. A walkers paradise sums up this part of the country-side perfectly. The panoramic views stretch for miles and the landscape; though sometimes wild is always awesome and inspiring. Another attraction for the avid walker is the solitude. In this sparsely populated area you can walk for miles with nothing to disturb your thoughts, other than the sounds of nature and when you consider that even the most intrusive mobile phone cannot pick up a signal in some of the remotest parts, a trek across the Wolds can be a truly cathartic one. |  |
 | The 79 miles of Wolds Way National Trail attracts the most discerning of hikers but there are shorter sections to suit the enthusiastic beginner and families alike. The Yorkshire Wolds has been a well-kept secret for many years but in 1982 the Wolds Way was officially opened that created a continuous footpath which offers a circuitous journey from Filey inland across to Hull. Many villages are dotted along the Wolds Way Walk that offer much needed respite in which to replenish provisions or have a well earned rest. For those who are hungry, something to eat is always available in one of the many cafes and restaurants available. |
| Some of the most spectacular Stately Homes are in the Wolds. There has been a Manor House at Sledmere since the medieval era. At Sledmere House, the history, peace and beauty of the charming stately home, together with attractive gardens and a deer park combine to make it one of the Wolds' hidden treasures. Throughout the year there are a number of exciting and unique events and festivals for the individual to enjoy at Sledmere House & Gardens. The Elizabethan House and Gardens of Burton Agnes Hall,(pictured right) can be found nestled between the busy market town of Driffield and the coastal town of Bridlington. This magnificent Late Elizabethan House is filled with treasure and art that has been accumulated over four centuries. Likewise the gardens are a truly magnificent treasure that include the "Riddle of the Maze", and there are always plenty of attractions to entertain the whole family. |  |
| The Wolds Way takes you through the most famous deserted medieval village in England; Wharram Percy. This fascinating 'lost' village has been deserted since 1500 and still retains a magical charm. Finally, a visit to the intriguing and peaceful ruins of Kirkham Priory, an Augustinian Priory set beside the River Derwent inspires all that is fabulous and unique about the Wolds and affords the visitor the opportunity upon which to reflect on this most secret and charming spot in Yorkshire. There are numerous places to stay along the Wolds Way; the busier towns such as Filey offer Hotels and smaller places like Foxholes offer bed and breakfast. Self-catering accommodation can be found in holiday cottages and camping and caravan sites in most of the villages and towns. |
