Former Prime Minister Harold Wilson was born in Huddersfield and a statue stands as a tribute to him found overlooking St George's Square. The refurbishment of this square won Kirklees Council a very prestigious award. Thousands of visitors flock to Marsden to visit the Standedge Tunnel Visitor Centre. This refurbished transhipment warehouse on the banks of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, provides the ideal place to sample a boat ride or simply immerse yourselves in the history of the British Waterways.(www.standedge.co.uk/)Huddersfield
HuddersfieldHuddersfield Town Hall is predictably impressive and inside you will find a richly decorated, wonderfully preserved, 1200 Victorian seated Concert Hall, famous for choral and brass concerts and Christmas performances of Handel’s Messiah, with lots of other events going on throughout the year. The open market is held in another fine building; with its cast iron features it unifies architecture and engineering. For specialist and unusual shops visit the Byram Arcade, yet another W.H Crossland building the entrance of which has a notable wrought iron canopy. Inside, there are three floors of shops and even a vegetarian cafe. Your shopping extravaganza would not be complete without a trip into the bustling Piazza Centre. Here you should be able to find all you require but do not ignore the designer charms of Zohm and Rico clothing. Lastly, on a more cultural and soothing note, why not spend some time perusing the Huddersfield Art Gallery, here you will find works by Francis Bacon, L.S Lowry and Henry Moore to name but a few.
Huddersfield is also famous for its university. It has a student village set in 366 acres and boasts student accommodation among the best in the country. The McAlpine Stadium is home to Huddersfield Town Football Club and Huddersfield Giants Rugby League with tours are available for the avid fans. Huddersfield’s railway station could be considered a stately home for trains; it is one of the finest classical stations outside of London and has regular train services passing through to Leeds and Manchester.
Hotels in Huddersfield offer a high standard of accommodation, as do the guest houses and bed and breakfasts. There are many pubs where you can get a brilliant pub lunch from and restaurants that offer a variety of cuisines. Huddersfield is south of Leeds, Bradford and the Yorkshire Dales. Under 3 miles away from the M62 and with its own railway station, Huddersfield has great links by road and rail.
